Everyday Chores That Can Affect Your Septic Tank

After we moved into our home, I realized that there were a few problems with the plumbing. It seemed like no matter what we did, the plumbing was having problems, and I knew it had to be because of our septic system. After carefully evaluating the system, we realized that there were some maintenance issues that we were still struggling with. We started making little changes, and before I knew it, things were moving along a lot better. I wanted to create a blog all about septic services so that other people would know how to resolve challenges early. Check it out!

Everyday Chores That Can Affect Your Septic Tank

When doing your household chores, you might not think much about your septic tank. However, various standard household chores can actually have an effect on your septic system. If you make some changes to how you handle these chores, however, you can help reduce the impact.

Laundry

If you're like a lot of people, you might have a designated day of the week on which you do all of your household laundry. However, you should know that this often isn't the best way to go about it. Since you'll be doing one load after another, you can overload your septic tank with wastewater from your washing machine. Giving your septic system a chance to catch up for a couple of hours in-between loads is smart. Even better, you may want to consider just doing a load every day or every other day rather than doing them all in a row. Not only is this better for your septic system, but it can make doing laundry a lot less overwhelming for you as well.

Dishes

When washing dishes, it is important to make sure that you scrape your plates in the trash can first. Food that ends up in your drain can actually cause clogs in your septic system. Additionally, it's always important to make sure that you dispose of used oil and grease in another way, such as by putting it in a sealable container that you can throw away in the trash can, if you don't want to clog up your septic system.

Cleaning the Bathroom

Using cleaning wipes to wipe off your sink, toilet and more can seem like a good idea. After all, you can just toss the wipes without worrying about spreading germs from one part of the bathroom to another, and the wipes often smell good and are easy and convenient to use as well. Just make sure that you toss them in the garbage rather than flushing them; they don't break down as quickly as toilet paper does, so they can cause clogs in your septic system.

Even though you might not usually think much about your septic tank, it's important to do so when you're doing various chores around the house. By making a few simple changes to the way that you do things when cleaning up around the house, you can help ensure that you do not damage your septic tank and accompanying system.
